While aristocrats were transforming the Golden Mile in the 1960s, entrepreneur Salvador Guerrero Ramirez was quietly building an alternative Marbella to the east. He acquired farmland covered in pine and cork oak, launched an international urban planning competition in 1960, and commissioned what would become Spain's only Hilton Hotel—the Don Carlos, which opened in 1969. Guerrero planted thousands of pine trees across the area, creating the green canopy that still defines Elviria today. By the late 1980s, a group of golfers led by publisher John Jenkins and engineer Colin Mosely secured land for what would become Santa María Golf Club, which opened its first nine holes in 1991. The course was built around a 19th-century cortijo that now serves as its clubhouse.

Today, Elviria functions as the de facto capital of Marbella East. Its commercial centre along the A-7 highway offers supermarkets, banks, international restaurants, and professional services—from Korean cuisine to Belgian brasseries. Below the highway, pine-shaded streets lead to sandy beaches where the Don Carlos (reopened in 2025 after a €43 million renovation) anchors a stretch that includes Nikki Beach, one of Marbella's most photographed venues. The adventure park Aventura Amazonia sits within the coastal pine forest. Three golf courses serve the area: Santa María (18 holes), Greenlife (9 holes, home to Michelin-starred El Lago restaurant), and nearby Cabopino. The hills of La Mairena offer contemporary villas with views to Gibraltar and Africa.

At €4,455/m², Elviria prices sit below the district average, reflecting its mix of product types—from beachside apartments to hillside villas, from 1970s townhouses to contemporary new-builds.
