The Golden Mile is Marbella's most prestigious coastal district, stretching approximately five kilometres from the town centre west to Puerto Banús. Home to the Marbella Club Hotel, Puente Romano resort, and some of Europe's most valuable beachfront real estate, it established Marbella as an international luxury destination in the 1950s. The district encompasses both the beachfront strip and the hillside neighbourhoods rising toward Sierra Blanca.
Lifestyle & Atmosphere
In 1954, a German-Spanish aristocrat named Alfonso von Hohenlohe converted his family's beachside finca into a small hotel for friends. He sent handwritten invitations to European royalty and Hollywood stars. Audrey Hepburn came. So did Ava Gardner, Cary Grant, the Rothschilds, and the von Bismarcks. The Marbella Club Hotel became the axis around which an entire luxury ecosystem would form. Today, the boulevard that connects it to Puerto Banús bears his name: Bulevar Príncipe Alfonso de Hohenlohe—what the world knows as the Golden Mile.
The district divides naturally into two zones. The beachside strip—from El Pirulí lighthouse to Puerto Banús—contains the historic resort hotels, frontline villas, and apartment complexes that define Marbella's international image. The mountainside extends upward through established neighbourhoods like Nagüeles, La Carolina, and Las Lomas toward the gated enclaves of Sierra Blanca and Cascada de Camoján. Each sub-area carries its own character, pricing, and buyer profile. Treating them as one market is the first mistake uninformed buyers make.
At €6,848/m², the Golden Mile commands Marbella's highest average asking prices. But averages obscure more than they reveal here. Sub-area prices range from €5,502 to €7,513 per square metre. Transaction prices tell a different story again. Understanding which numbers matter—and what the gaps between them mean for your negotiation—is the difference between buying well and simply buying.
